To be honest, this poem is more of a means to release emotion than to display great artistic skill (although I hope it isn't bad). I've been rather emotional ever since I started hearing about Tyler Clementi on the news.
For those who don't know, Tyler was a college student who was filmed having sex with another man. Those that filmed him then put it up on the internet and he consequently killed himself by jumping off of a bridge. He was an incredibly talented violinist as well. If you want more details, you can check online.
I know he's not the first and he won't be the last. Why does it have to be like this?
I hope his death means something. I hope that it propels us and moves us forward. It's no secret: we live in a world of hatred, ignorance, and fear. I know this, and I know that you can't just make all of that disappear; it's part of what makes us human. But I also believe that things can get better.
It might seem odd, but I'm reminded of a quote from the film Superman Returns. It's Superman's father addressing him.
"They can be a great people, Kal-El, they wish to be. They only lack the light to show the way. For this reason above all, their capacity for good, I have sent them you... my only son."
Now, I realize that this seems to come out of left-field, but I think that this quote really captures the way I feel. Prepare yourself for sentimentality.
We are the Supermans of our world. We can show people the way to be better people. I know; we can't melt metal with our eyes or lift semis with one hand, but we have a better weapon; our minds working in conjunction with our hearts. I firmly believe that Tyler Clementi's death (and every other person who has suffered in similar ways for any reason) was a sign of a social problem that needs to change. As Ellen DeGeneres said about this, it's a wake-up call.
So I hope we can all be like Superman and show people the way to a better future. For Tyler's sake, and for our sake as well. This world and its people have too much potential for good things for a single life to be wasted because of ignorance and a petty prank.
So don't forget Tyler, and don't forget what hatred and ignorance can do.
Sorry if I'm long-winded, but I had to get this out. Thanks for reading. I hope we can all help save the world a little bit at a time.
